Strengthening Korea-U.S. Economic Cooperation by Connecting Korean Companies and USFK Veterans

On the 9th, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in operating a "Job Platform for USFK Veterans" (hereinafter "the platform") together with the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation and domestic companies with operations in the United States at the KCCI headquarters, and officially launched the platform.

This agreement was established to support job matching in the United States between Korean companies operating in the U.S. and U.S. veterans who have served with the United States Forces Korea, using the platform built by KCCI, and to contribute to expanding Korea-U.S. cooperation and partnership based on this initiative.

The signing ceremony was attended by Park Iljun, Senior Vice Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Im Hoyoung, Chairman of the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation; James Heller, Charg? d'Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Korea; Kim Daeja, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Standards at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; James Kim, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea; Lee Hyounghee, Vice Chairman of Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and representatives from leading Korean companies operating in the United States, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Hyundai Motor Company.

The platform has participation from 21 companies actively engaged in a variety of industries in the United States, including advanced manufacturing such as semiconductors, automobiles, and secondary batteries, as well as energy, shipbuilding, robotics, bio, and food. The participating companies are Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, SK On, SK Biopharmaceuticals, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, LG Energy Solution, Lotte Infracell, POSCO Holdings, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Qcells, HD Hyundai Electric, GS Engineering and Construction, E-Mart, LS Group, Doosan Bobcat, HyAxiom, Doosan Robotics, Korea Zinc, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and Sangmidang Holdings. These industries are experiencing an increasing demand for various roles in manufacturing, research and development (R&D), sales, and services in the U.S. market.

Under the agreement, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be responsible for platform operation and promotional activities targeted at companies, while the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation will be in charge of guidance and encouraging participation among veterans. The companies will support posting and managing job openings on the platform, and will also conduct recruitment processes for USFK veterans who apply through the platform.

Veterans who have served in Korea with the United States Forces Korea are considered valuable talent for Korean companies operating in the U.S., as they have a high level of understanding of Korean society and culture and possess experience that bridges the two countries.

Since the first MOU for business cooperation with the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation in September last year, the KCCI has introduced the platform to stakeholders at major U.S. military bases such as Pyeongtaek, Dongducheon, and Osan, while also establishing ongoing cooperation with relevant organizations. In addition, KCCI has conducted briefings and promotional activities for companies, gradually building the foundation for activating the platform.

Park Iljun, Senior Vice Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, "As our companies' proactive investments are leading to large-scale job creation in the United States, I expect that USFK veterans will share in the benefits and that bilateral relations will be further strengthened." He added, "We will focus on advancing the platform and expanding participating companies so that this platform can become a representative 'win-win' model of Korea-U.S. cooperation, simultaneously addressing labor shortages for Korean companies and supporting employment for U.S. veterans."

James Kim, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, responded, "I highly appreciate Chairman Chey Tae-won and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry for driving such a leading and meaningful initiative," and added, "Given the strong Korea-U.S. alliance, it is highly significant to provide job opportunities for U.S. veterans at Korean companies operating in the United States through this initiative."
