On March 9, Samsung SDI announced that it will unveil a pouch-type all-solid-state battery sample for physical artificial intelligence (AI) applications, including humanoid robots, for the first time at 'InterBattery 2026' to be held at COEX in Seoul on March 11. Samsung SDI will also introduce ultra-high output batteries used in uninterruptible power supplies and battery backup units essential for AI data centers, showcasing its world-class all-solid-state technology capabilities.
At this event, Samsung SDI will reveal a variety of innovative technologies and products in the largest exhibition space among participating companies. In particular, it will present its all-solid-state battery technology, which is under development with mass production targeted for the second half of next year. For the first time, Samsung SDI plans to unveil the pouch-type all-solid-state battery sample developed for the increasingly prominent field of physical AI.
Samsung SDI is developing an all-solid-state battery for physical AI applications in a pouch-type form factor to achieve both high safety and output with reduced weight. For robots, battery installation space is typically limited, so specifications require small size, high energy density, and long operating time. Since robots experience instantaneous power peaks while operating, high output performance is also required. Having developed prismatic all-solid-state batteries for electric vehicles to date, Samsung SDI now plans to diversify form factors to apply its batteries to a wider range of applications, including humanoids, various robots, aviation systems, and next-generation wearables.
At InterBattery 2026, Samsung SDI will operate the largest exhibition booth among participating companies. The exhibition concept is 'Inside AI', vividly demonstrating how batteries are used in various industries and everyday life. The main area of the booth is designed to resemble an actual IT company's data center, allowing visitors to feel as though they are inside a real data center.
At the center of the booth is a model of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) installed in a data center, equipped with Samsung SDI's UPS battery 'U8A1'. The U8A1 employs a proprietary prismatic battery form factor with lithium manganese oxide (LMO) material, delivering both high output performance and safety. As a product exclusively for AI data centers, it provides high energy density, improving space efficiency by 33% compared to existing products. This enables data centers to supply the required power quickly and reliably with fewer batteries. Furthermore, unlike conventional UPS batteries that operate only during emergencies such as power outages, the U8A1 also stabilizes power quality when AI power demand surges, making it optimized for UPS customers' needs.
On one side of the booth, Samsung SDI will display the full lineup of its Samsung Battery Box (SBB) energy storage system (ESS) solutions, which are essential for stable and eco-friendly power management in the AI era. A Samsung SDI representative said, "Visitors will be able to view the interior of the SBB 1.5, which contains tens of thousands of high-nickel NCA (Nickel, Cobalt, Aluminum) prismatic battery cells in a 20-foot container," adding, "They can also check out the differentiated ESS safety technology, including the built-in direct injection system within the module."
In the SBB Zone, Samsung SDI will introduce, for the first time at this year's InterBattery event, fire prevention software for ESS applications. This AI-based program diagnoses overall battery health, including status, lifespan, and anomalies, and detects and predicts issues in advance. The software is trained on data collected from more than 140 ESS sites in Korea and overseas. Leveraging its proprietary algorithm and self-developed diagnostic indices, Samsung SDI analyzes and predicts battery conditions in advance.
Samsung SDI, which holds the largest number of prismatic battery technology patents in the battery industry, also plans to highlight the differentiated performance and safety technologies of its prismatic batteries. In particular, the company will showcase its independently accumulated expertise by displaying products such as the '700Wh/L high-energy prismatic battery,' which won the 'InterBattery Awards' this year. Meanwhile, visitors can directly examine power tools equipped with Samsung SDI cylindrical batteries, experiencing firsthand the company's ultra-high output cylindrical battery technology. Samsung SDI's cylindrical batteries feature technology that reduces internal cell resistance, enabling high output and fast charging. A circular saw equipped with a Samsung SDI cylindrical battery can reduce working time by up to 40% when cutting wood compared to conventional batteries, and can be charged to 80% capacity in just 15 minutes.
