Pohang City’s ambitious recruitment for preliminary tenants of the '2026 Pohang-style Thousand-Won Housing,' a project aimed at ensuring housing stability for young adults and newlyweds, is drawing considerable attention from the very start.
According to Pohang City, as of 4:00 p.m. on March 5, the first day of applications, a total of 439 households had already submitted their applications.
This enthusiastic response is seen as a direct result of the project’s bold condition of a daily rent of just 1,000 won, which accurately meets the needs of young people struggling with housing costs.

In particular, this year’s application requirements have been significantly eased.
The selection criteria have been simplified to focus solely on the applicant’s own income and assets, while a separate application type for non-local residents has been introduced to actively encourage population inflow from other regions.
Last year, there was also a major response, with 854 households applying for 100 available units. In fact, 19 non-local households ended up moving to Pohang, successfully serving as a catalyst for revitalizing the local community.
The Pohang City Housing Welfare Center, located next to Buk-gu Office, was crowded with applicants carrying their documents from early in the morning.
One applicant visiting the site shared, "I have been struggling with soaring monthly rent, but this Thousand-Won Housing policy is exactly what young people and newlyweds need. I hope for good results so that I can settle down and live in Pohang for a long time."
A Pohang City official stated, "Establishing a stable housing foundation for young adults and newlyweds is an important investment in the city’s future," adding, "We will continue to focus our administrative resources on making Pohang a city where young people want to stay or return, and an environment suitable for raising children."
This application period will close on March 6. After document screening and eligibility checks, the final list of preliminary tenants will be announced on June 24 via the Pohang City Housing Welfare Center blog.
Further details can be found in the official announcement on the Pohang City website.
