Gwangju Metropolitan City has implemented personnel transfers for 16 senior officials at the bureau and division level in order to address key issues such as preparations for administrative integration with South Jeolla Province, the relocation of the military airport, and the 50th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
On March 5, Gwangju City announced that it had conducted personnel transfers for 16 bureau and division-level officials. The city explained that these appointments are intended to ensure the stable advancement of major initiatives, including preparations for the launch of the Integrated Special City-scheduled for July 1 in accordance with the Special Act on the Establishment of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City-the military airport relocation, and the 50th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
The city will assign senior officials with expertise and organizational management capabilities to key positions, thereby strengthening administrative integration preparations and the execution of core policies.
At the bureau director level, Eunok Jeon, the current Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau, has been appointed as Head of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Administrative Integration Task Force. Jin-ho So, currently Chief Secretary, has been appointed as Head of the Integrated Airport Future City Headquarters. Inchae Hwang, previously Director of the Citizens Communication Division, will become Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau.
Eunok Jeon, as Head of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Administrative Integration Task Force, will be responsible for coordinating issues that may arise during the integration process and overseeing the overall design of the integrated organization and administrative integration efforts.
Jin-ho So, as Head of the Integrated Airport Future City Headquarters, will oversee the military airport relocation, intergovernmental cooperation, and regional communication. He will also advance medium- to long-term projects such as the conceptualization of a future city linked to the integrated airport construction.
Inchae Hwang, as Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau, will be in charge of policies to establish a culture-centered city and expanding cultural policies into citizen-oriented projects.
There are 13 division-level appointments. To prepare for the 50th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement, Gwangju City has formed the “May 18 Democratization Movement 50th Anniversary Planning Team” and appointed Kyunghee Yeo, Director of the May 18 Democratization Division, as the head of the team.
Marking the 50th anniversary, the city plans to re-examine the historical significance of the May Spirit, promote its universal values, and establish actionable plans for passing it on to future generations.
Sangyul Kim, Director of Human Resources Policy, stated, “This round of appointments focused on enhancing both the planning and execution capabilities of the organization following the passage of the special law. We will strengthen dedicated systems such as the Administrative Integration Task Force and the May 18 Democratization Movement 50th Anniversary Planning Team to deliver tangible results.”
Starting with these bureau and division-level transfers, Gwangju City plans to sequentially implement additional personnel appointments for positions at grade 5 and below, in order to ensure organizational stability and secure momentum for policy implementation.
