Violinist Clara Jumi Kang and pianist Sunwook Kim will present a duo performance in Korea for the first time in five years.
According to performance planning company Credia on March 4, Clara Jumi Kang and Sunwook Kim will hold a duo concert at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on May 23. Starting with a performance at the Sejong Arts Center on May 19, they plan to tour 11 cities nationwide, including Seoul.
This performance will feature violin sonatas that combine gravitas and lyricism. Through works by Beethoven, Respighi, Weinberg, and Richard Strauss, the program will explore the evolution of the sonata from the classical and romantic periods to the 20th century.
The concert will open with Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 1. Beethoven's sonatas are a signature repertoire for both performers, who have previously presented the complete sonatas as a project and on recordings. This will be followed by Respighi's Sonata in B minor, known for its lyrical melodies and rich harmonies.
The second half of the concert will focus on 20th-century works. It will feature Mieczysław Weinberg's Violin Sonata No. 4, followed by Strauss's Sonata. Weinberg's piece is characterized by its tense development and emotional intensity, while Strauss's work is noted for its melodic beauty and technical brilliance.
Clara Jumi Kang and Sunwook Kim have collaborated on multiple occasions, including the 2021 Beethoven Violin Sonata Complete Project. Last year, they performed together at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, and in January of this year, they shared the stage at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (LA). In August, they are scheduled for a duo performance at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.
Tickets for the Seoul Arts Center concert are available for reservation starting March 4.
