Gyeonggi Institute of Economic Science and Technology Signs MOU with Army and Two Other Organizations to Establish AX Innovation Ecosystem

On March 4, the Gyeonggi Institute of Economic Science and Technology signed a four-party memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the Pangyo Startup Campus with the Army, the Agency for Defense Development (KRIT), and the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA) to establish the AX Innovation Ecosystem.

AX stands for 'AI Transformation,' which is a project that aims to fundamentally change the way work is conducted in military organizations, weapon systems, logistics, and administration by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI).

This agreement was promoted with the goal of establishing an Army AX hub within Gyeonggi Province to lead the AI transformation in the defense industry sector. It also aims to gradually open defense data held by the military to the private sector in order to support the creation of new industries by local companies.

Under the agreement, the four organizations will jointly promote initiatives such as: ▲ establishing an open collaboration system and innovative growth platform between the public, private, and military sectors; ▲ cooperating to apply private-sector AI technologies to secure AI solutions for actual deployment; ▲ advancing spin-on/spin-off strategies through mutual application of civilian and military technologies; and ▲ fostering defense AI professionals and developing support systems for military-related startups.

The Gyeonggi Institute of Economic Science and Technology will systematize demand discovery and technology matching to ensure that local companies can reliably secure opportunities for defense field validation. The institute will also strengthen joint research and testbed operations linked to defense projects, thereby creating an environment where developed technologies can be applied in the field.

Hyun Changha, Executive Director of Future Industries at the Gyeonggi Institute of Economic Science and Technology, stated, "This agreement is an exemplary model of collaboration between the public, private, and military sectors, connecting Pangyo's innovative technology with defense capabilities to achieve tangible results. We plan to swiftly implement follow-up measures to build a world-class defense AI ecosystem, enabling local companies to gain competitiveness in the global defense industry market."
