The sea off Pohang is coming back to life.
After taking a brief breather over the winter, Pohang Cruise has resumed full-scale operations with the arrival of the warm spring, raising expectations for a recovery in local tourism.
In particular, it is drawing attention in the industry as it is estimated that about 1,700 passengers used the service during the Lunar New Year holiday period alone this year.
This performance was achieved despite the adverse conditions of a prolonged cold wave and an economic downturn, and is being seen as once again proving the underlying strength of Pohang’s marine tourism.
Pohang Cruise operates along the Yeongilman Bay area and is one of Pohang’s signature tourism offerings, allowing passengers to enjoy both the deep-blue waters of the East Sea and the area’s beautiful coastal scenery at the same time.
An operations official said, “The figure of 1,700 passengers during the Lunar New Year holiday is a positive signal for the recovery of local tourism,” adding, “With the spring season upon us, we have finished preparations to welcome more tourists by expanding onboard events and hands-on programs.”
Local merchants also expressed their expectations.
They forecast that the increase in cruise passengers will lead to more visits to nearby restaurants, cafes, and traditional markets, gradually expanding the impact of longer-stay tourism.
