The Nam Gyeongju National Sports Center was selected in September 2024 for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's 2025 National Sports Center (Community-Based) Construction Support Program, securing 3 billion won in national funding.

The total project cost is 16 billion won, including 3 billion won in national funding and 13 billion won in local funding.

The center will be built as a three-story above-ground building with a total floor area of 3,500 square meters within the Oedong Second General Industrial Complex.

The first and second floors will house convenience facilities such as a 25-meter, six-lane swimming pool, an infant and toddler pool, and a fitness center, while the third floor will include a small gymnasium (GX room) and offices.

A total of 12 entries were submitted to the design competition.

The judging committee, consisting of seven architectural experts, conducted a comprehensive evaluation of layout and space, landscape and technical planning, and selected the joint submission by Raum Architects Co., Ltd. and Woowon Architects Co., Ltd. as the winning entry.

The city anonymized all entries and released the entire judging process on YouTube to ensure fairness and transparency.

The Oedong area is the only one among Gyeongju City's five zones that does not have a swimming pool, and residents and industrial complex workers have been continuously calling for an expansion of sports facilities.

Gyeongju City expects this project to contribute to expanding the base for daily sports activities in the Nam Gyeongju area and improving local living conditions.

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young said, "We will build a balanced infrastructure for daily sports through the construction of national sports centers in each zone," adding, "We will create a sports environment that any citizen can conveniently use close to home."

Meanwhile, Gyeongju City plans to complete the detailed design this year, begin construction early next year, and finish the project in December 2028.
