Through this, the company aims to raise the level of safety, health and environmental management that can be tangibly felt in the workplace and to establish a sustainable SHE culture.
Through the contest, Korea Zinc encouraged all employees to participate in SHE activities and focused on strengthening their ability to respond to safety, health and environmental issues that may arise across all areas of work. To ensure a wide range of improvement cases could be discovered, there was no limit on the number of entries. Award-winning cases were selected mainly from those that systematically analyzed risk factors and necessary improvements identified directly in the workplace and then successfully translated them into actual improvements.
The contest was conducted in two categories: safety and health, and environment. Entries were required to be prepared according to a five-step process: background, risk assessment, development of improvement measures, implementation of improvements, and verification of improvement effects. In the safety and health category, most entries focused on improvement activities such as enhancing protective devices and facilities, while in the environment category, many cases demonstrated environmental improvement effects through equipment and system upgrades.
Korea Zinc comprehensively evaluated the systematic nature and effectiveness of the improvement activities, their applicability in the field, and the resulting improvement effects, and selected a total of six teams: one Grand Prize, one Best Prize, and one Excellence Prize team in each category. Prize-winning teams received cash awards and plaques to encourage the wider spread of SHE activities.
Kim Seunghyun, Head of the Onsan Smelter, said, "This contest is highly meaningful in that it discovered and shared improvement cases that were actually implemented in the field and had their effectiveness verified," adding, "We will further strengthen our field-oriented SHE management culture by sharing best practices company-wide and using them as in-house training materials."
