The first pedestrian-only path in Busan that crosses the Suyeong River has been completed.
The Busan Metropolitan City Government (Mayor Park Heongjoon) announced that at 2:00 p.m. on the 12th it will hold a completion ceremony for the “Suyeong River Human Bridge Construction Project” on the upper deck of the pedestrian bridge toward APEC Naru Park.
The completion ceremony will proceed in the order of a progress report and a commemorative event, with about 250 participants including Mayor Park Heongjoon, city council members, Haeundae District Mayor Kim Seongsu, Suyeong District Mayor Kang Seongtae, construction officials, and citizens.
The “Suyeong River Human Bridge Construction Project” is a flagship project of the city’s pedestrian-centered “15-minute city” initiative that has been pursued since 2020. It has been promoted to connect the previously disconnected banks of the Suyeong River, improve pedestrian convenience for citizens, and expand waterfront cultural and tourism spaces.
With this opening, the residential areas of Suyeong District, Haeundae District’s APEC Naru Park, and the Busan Cinema Center will be linked into a single living zone. Citizens will be able to access waterfront spaces and major tourist hubs on foot.
A pedestrian tourism route will also be formed connecting Gwangalli, the Suyeong River, the Busan Cinema Center, and Haeundae. Beyond a simple passage function, it is expected to serve as a stay-type pedestrian space where people can linger and take in views of the Suyeong River landscape. The city expects it to become a symbolic pedestrian tourism landmark that provides everyday rest spaces for citizens and new waterfront tourism content for visitors.
The city plans to designate the entire section of the Human Bridge as Busan’s first pedestrian-only path. Pursuant to Article 16 of the “Act on the Promotion of Pedestrian Safety and Convenience,” the entire section will be designated as a pedestrian-only path with no access for vehicles, bicycles, or personal mobility devices (PM), in order to create an environment where pedestrians and transportation-vulnerable persons can use the bridge with peace of mind.
Mayor Park Heongjoon said, “The Suyeong River Human Bridge is a symbolic example that showcases the philosophy of the 15-minute city that we have been pursuing, and it will become a cultural axis that connects mountains, rivers, beaches, and Busan’s landmarks around walking, starting from the neighborhood walking paths in front of people’s homes,” adding, “We will work to ensure that a daily life where citizens walk, meet neighbors, and share the warmth of life becomes both the present and the future of Busan.”
