As discussions on administrative integration between South Chungcheong Province and Daejeon accelerate, Cho Dongjun, former chairperson of the Seocheon County Council and regarded as a key figure for the Democratic Party of Korea in South Chungcheong, announced on the 9th that he will run for a seat in the South Chungcheong Provincial Assembly in the 2nd electoral district in the upcoming June 3 local elections.

Cho has put forward a line of "realistic politics," pledging to institutionalize and firmly secure Seocheon's role within the integrated metropolitan governance framework.

On this day, Cho held a press conference at the planned site of his campaign office in Seocheon-eup, officially kicking off his election campaign.

The press conference was attended in large numbers by Democratic Party of Korea members, including Yoo Seunggwang, who plans to run for Seocheon County Governor, as well as prospective county council candidates, demonstrating the party's cohesion at the local level.

Cho stated, "The integration of Daejeon and South Chungcheong is not a matter of choice, but a matter of preparation," adding, "Within the integrated metropolitan system, I will establish institutional safeguards so that Seocheon County's industrial, marine, ecological, and rural functions are not pushed to the margins."

In particular, he proposed designating Seocheon as a "Specially Managed Area at Risk of Extinction" and concentrating policies and budget resources there.

His strategy is to protect the region not by focusing on population inflow, but by improving "settlement conditions," with youth housing and jobs, living SOC (social overhead capital), and welfare facilities as the core pillars.

Cho stressed, "The approach of seeking solutions to local extinction merely by increasing numbers has reached its limits," and added, "The most realistic alternative is to improve the quality of life for existing residents so that they do not leave."

As a future growth strategy, he proposed building an "ecology, marine, and environment industrial cluster" by linking the National Institute of Ecology, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, the Geum River estuary, and the planned national eco-industrial complex in Jeonghang.

He envisions creating a structure that connects Seocheon's nationally significant ecological and marine assets to industry and jobs.

Cho said, "The integrated metropolitan system must not become a platform only for large cities," and continued, "I will design policy and budget structures so that Seocheon's ecological, marine, and rural functions serve as key pillars supporting the overall competitiveness of South Chungcheong Province."

He went on to say, "Politics is not completed by declarations, but by institutions," emphasizing, "Drawing on my experience across the field, administration, and legislative affairs, I will deliver results through feasible policies."

Meanwhile, Cho has served as a deputy spokesperson and vice chair of the Policy Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea, as well as a member of the Special Committee on Fine Dust Countermeasures. He also played a strategic role connecting the central government and the region by serving as co-head of the South Chungcheong election committee and joint election committee chair for Boryeong and Seocheon in the presidential campaigns of Moon Jae-in and Lee Jae-myung.
