Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam is launching a "Special Monitoring Campaign for the Prevention of Environmental Pollution during the Lunar New Year Holiday" to ensure a safe holiday without environmental pollution accidents ahead of Seol, the nation’s traditional holiday.
The city has designated the period from the 9th to the 13th, before the Lunar New Year holiday begins, as a "key prevention period." During this time, it will send official cooperation letters requesting voluntary inspections to 1,256 sites within its jurisdiction, while strengthening on-site monitoring and inspections at around 40 business sites located in areas vulnerable to environmental pollution.
From the 14th to the 18th, when the holiday is in full swing, the city will operate an "Environmental Pollution Situation Room" to enable a swift initial response in the event of an environmental pollution accident. A total of 45 staff members will be assigned to the situation room, which will be run in coordination between City Hall and the five district offices.
The city plans to minimize blind spots in environmental pollution that may arise during the holiday by operating a pollution report center, maintaining an emergency contact system, and conducting river patrol activities.
In addition, to prevent environmental pollution accidents, the city is urging businesses to autonomously manage their facilities and citizens to actively report violations, and it plans to block the spread of damage through immediate on-site response in the event of a pollution accident.
Lee Yujeong, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, said, "Since the Lunar New Year holiday is a time when management and supervision can easily become lax, we will do our best to create a safe holiday that returning visitors and citizens can feel secure about through thorough pre-inspections and a swift response system."
