On January 31, the North Gyeongsang Provincial Government (Governor Lee Cheolwoo) held an opening ceremony for the "Hyoja-Sangwon Road Construction Project," a marine bridge (Haeoreum Bridge) connecting Songdo-dong in Nam-gu and Hanggu-dong in Buk-gu, Pohang. The event was attended by Governor Lee Cheolwoo, People Power Party lawmakers Kim Jeongjae and Lee Sanghui, members of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly, and about 300 others.
The Hyoja-Sangwon road spans a total length of 1.36 kilometers, including a 395-meter cable-stayed bridge and 965 meters of connecting roads. The total project cost was 74.8 billion won. Construction began on June 28, 2021, and the road opened after five years of work.
With the opening of this road, travel time between Songdo Beach and Yeongildae Beach will be reduced from the original 10 minutes to just 3 to 4 minutes. The commuting time for vehicles traveling to and from nearby industrial complexes such as POSCO will also decrease, which is expected to significantly help disperse urban traffic.
The Haeoreum Bridge features an observation deck inside its main tower, offering views of the sunrise over the East Sea, and is open to the public at all times. At night, seasonal landscape lighting creates a visually striking bridge. The bridge is expected to greatly contribute to the revitalization of local businesses and tourism by linking with regional attractions such as the Pohang International Fireworks Festival and the Canal Festival.
In addition, the Haeoreum Bridge will officially open to traffic at 2 p.m. on February 2.
Lee Cheolwoo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province, stated, "The Haeoreum Bridge is the only marine bridge in North Gyeongsang Province with an observation deck, providing a new attraction in Yeongil Bay. It is expected to draw tourists to Pohang and greatly contribute to the revitalization of the local economy."
