Gwangsan District in Gwangju has officially launched its "24-Hour Disaster and Safety Integrated Situation Room," which is responsible for receiving reports, disseminating information, and taking initial response measures in the event of a disaster. The district has established an integrated response system that operates continuously, regardless of day or night, weekends, or holidays.
According to Gwangsan District on February 1, the "24-Hour Disaster and Safety Integrated Situation Room" has been set up on the fourth floor of the district office, and a system dedicated to disaster safety management is now in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dedicated personnel are stationed in the situation room to comprehensively handle report intake, situation assessment, information dissemination, and command of initial response measures whenever a disaster occurs.
The district explained that the need for a constant, integrated disaster response system became apparent after experiencing a major fire at the Kumho Tire Gwangju plant in May last year and extreme heavy rainfall in July and August. As a result, disaster response functions that had previously been dispersed were consolidated into a single situation room.
When a disaster occurs, the Disaster and Safety Integrated Situation Room is also responsible for issuing safety alert text messages and broadcasting disaster forecasts and warnings. The room compiles various reports, weather information, and data provided by related agencies to analyze the likelihood of disasters and the potential for damage escalation, and initiates an initial response based on this analysis.
Operation and management of the disaster safety information system have also been integrated into the situation room. Previously, disaster surveillance cameras (CCTV), underground road barriers, and pump stations were all managed by separate systems, but with the establishment of the "365 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Disaster Safety Platform," the situation room can now provide comprehensive management and operation.
Accordingly, in the event of a disaster, the situation room can immediately close underground roads if necessary and share control status with relevant agencies in real time.
Since March last year, Gwangsan District has been formulating detailed plans for operating the Disaster and Safety Integrated Situation Room, and has been preparing step by step by securing dedicated personnel and space, and establishing the necessary information systems.
A Gwangsan District official stated, "Centered on the Disaster and Safety Integrated Situation Room, we will establish a response system that ensures the safety of citizens 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," adding, "We will pursue safety administration that citizens can truly feel through thorough inspections, prevention, and prompt response."
