Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced that, in celebration of February’s Lunar New Year holiday and March’s new school year and spring season, it will significantly increase both the purchase limit and incentive for ‘Tantan Pay’ from the previous monthly limit of 500,000 won and 10% cashback to a new monthly limit of 750,000 won and 20% cashback. As a result, users can now receive up to 150,000 won in cashback benefits per month.
This incentive expansion has been introduced to reduce the perceived cost burden for both tourists and citizens visiting Taebaek during the Lunar New Year holiday and the 33rd Taebaeksan Snow Festival, a signature winter event, as well as to revitalize the local commercial district. The benefits are available not only to Taebaek residents but also to any South Korean citizen visiting Taebaek, all of whom can receive a 20% cashback benefit through Tantan Pay.
Tourists visiting Taebaek can issue a card through the local currency smartphone app ‘Geurigo’ or receive instant card issuance at the Economic Affairs Division (local administrative welfare centers) and tourist information centers.
The city expects that this increase in incentives will help restore consumer sentiment dampened by the prolonged economic downturn and provide tangible savings on travel expenses for tourists, thereby promoting local spending in areas near the festival venue, traditional markets, and other commercial districts.
A Taebaek City official stated, “With the significant increase in incentives, we hope citizens will enjoy a more abundant Lunar New Year holiday and that the local economy will gain real momentum,” adding, “We hope that everyone in South Korea will enjoy a more affordable and enriching winter trip in Taebaek with 20% extra savings.”
