Gwangju Buk-gu is launching customized artificial intelligence (AI) education programs to bridge the digital divide among local youth and nurture future talent.
According to Gwangju Buk-gu on January 29, the district will officially operate the "Youth AI Experience and Coding School" for local teenagers starting next month.
This initiative, implemented for the first time this year based on a proposal from the Youth Committee of the Resident Participatory Budget, will invest 50 million won from the district budget to provide tailored education and hands-on opportunities to about 1,000 elementary, middle, and high school students from underprivileged backgrounds.
The program consists of three main courses: the AI Coding School, the Future Experience AI School, and the Distinguished Guest AI Academy.
First, the AI Coding School offers hands-on training led by university professors and AI experts, where students directly code programming robots and implement specific movements. The course will be held 15 times through October, with each session featuring eight hours of intensive instruction.
The Future Experience AI School will be conducted in collaboration with the National Gwangju Science Museum. It will provide career exploration education related to AI professions for approximately 370 children from 109 local children's centers in Buk-gu, with a total of 24 sessions.
The Distinguished Guest AI Academy is scheduled to be held once in the first half and once in the second half of the year. In cooperation with the Office of Education, relevant topics linked to the school curriculum will be selected, and distinguished speakers from related fields will be invited to encourage youth participation.
When all programs conclude in November, Buk-gu will conduct a satisfaction survey among participants and reflect the results in the planning of next year's initiatives.
Moon In, Mayor of Buk-gu, stated, "As we enter an era where AI is utilized across all sectors of society, we have prepared this project to help young people develop future competencies. Moving forward, we will continue to actively promote various support programs to strengthen residents' AI capabilities in cooperation with relevant organizations."
