Dongyeon Kim, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, announced the decision to pay 34.1 billion won in unpaid overtime allowances to firefighters, marking the end of a 16-year-long issue.


On the 29th, Governor Kim stated in a post on his social networking service (SNS), "The long-standing wish of Gyeonggi Province firefighters is finally coming to a close after 16 years," and added, "We have decided to pay 34.1 billion won in unpaid overtime allowances."


He particularly emphasized, "I believed that this issue, which has continued for a long time, should not be viewed solely through the lens of legal and administrative logic," and explained, "This is because the overtime work of firefighters is the result of their dedication to protecting the lives and safety of the residents."

He continued, "This decision reflects Gyeonggi Province's commitment to providing fair compensation for labor," and added, "Therefore, regardless of whether a lawsuit has been filed, we have decided to pay the unpaid allowances fairly to all eligible recipients."


He also promised, "When the work of firefighters is properly respected and protected, the lives of our residents become safer," and pledged, "Gyeonggi Province will continue to faithfully fulfill this responsibility in the future."


On this day, Gyeonggi Province announced that it would pay a total of 34.1 billion won in unpaid overtime allowances to 8,245 current and former firefighters by March 31.
