Government Selects Two New Port and Logistics Technologies from Busan Port Authority

Unmanned and AI-Based Smart Logistics Systems Designated as Outstanding Logistics Technologies
On-Site Demonstration of Technology Completed, Support Expected for Technology Deployment and Adoption

Two new port logistics technologies developed by Busan Port Authority have been recognized as outstanding technologies by the government.

On January 28, Busan Port Authority (BPA; President Song Sangkeun) announced that its "Real-time Port Crane Wire Rope Defect Diagnosis System" and "Tram-based Dedicated Automated Transport Shuttle System for Transshipment Cargo" have been designated as outstanding logistics technologies by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The Outstanding Logistics Technology Designation System, under the Framework Act on Logistics Policies, recognizes logistics technologies and systems that are either developed for the first time in Korea or significantly improve upon existing technologies, following an expert review process. Designated technologies are eligible for benefits such as qualification to apply for designation as excellent procurement products and mandatory purchase by public institutions, supporting field adoption and market expansion.

The wire rope diagnosis system is a predictive maintenance technology that detects defects in port crane wire ropes in real time using magnetic field change detection and artificial intelligence. It was jointly developed by Enkia Co., Ltd. and Busan Port Authority to minimize crane downtime during operations.

The transshipment cargo shuttle system is a rail-based, electric-powered equipment technology that automatically transports transshipment cargo between terminals within Busan Port using an unmanned system. Developed jointly by Busan Port Authority and Syscon Robotics Co., Ltd., it utilizes two shuttles for automatic container transportation.

The wire rope diagnosis system has completed on-site demonstration at New Port Piers 3 and 7, while the transshipment cargo shuttle system has been demonstrated at the former Jasungdae Pier rail yard.

Busan Port Authority has continued to develop and demonstrate new technologies in collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises, focusing on unmanned automation, smart logistics, and eco-friendly and safety technologies that reflect the needs of port operations. The authority explained that this designation officially recognizes the achievements and field applicability of these technologies.

The authority plans to further advance these technologies by incorporating feedback from the demonstration process, expand field adoption, and promote the spread of new port logistics technologies, including entry into overseas markets.

Song Sangkeun, President of Busan Port Authority, emphasized, "This is a case where a field-oriented technology development strategy has led to tangible results," adding, "We will continue to collaborate with startups and small and medium-sized enterprises in the shipping and logistics sectors to strengthen the competitiveness of Busan Port and the national logistics industry."
