On January 27, Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH) announced that it will co-host the "Metropolitan Area Public Corporations Urban Renewal Council Joint Forum" together with Incheon Housing & City Development Corporation (iH) and Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation (GH).
The event, scheduled for January 28 at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, will feature expert presentations and panel discussions under the theme "The Role of Public Enterprises and Strategies to Promote Public Participation for Sustainable Public Renewal." Topics will include responses to the rapidly changing urban renewal environment and institutional reforms needed to revitalize urban renewal in the metropolitan area.
Changmoo Lee, a professor at Hanyang University, will deliver a keynote speech on "Urban Renewal Projects and the Restructuring of the Metropolitan Area's Spatial Structure." Additional presentations will address directions for improving public-led urban renewal projects and tasks for expanding urban housing supply through public sector initiatives. A comprehensive panel discussion will also be held, focusing on institutional reforms to enhance the effectiveness of public urban renewal projects and the leading role of public enterprises.
Previously, SH, iH, and GH launched the "Metropolitan Area Public Corporations Urban Regeneration Council" in 2015 to explore sustainable development strategies for the region. Over the past decade, the organizations have continued their collaborative efforts. In May of last year, in response to the government's shift in urban policy from regeneration to renewal, they changed the name to the "Metropolitan Area Public Corporations Urban Renewal Council" and expanded the scope of their cooperation.
Based on the discussions at this forum, the council plans to continue making policy recommendations and conducting joint research to maximize synergy in the metropolitan area’s urban renewal sector.
Hwang Sangha, President of SH, stated, "This joint forum is a meaningful opportunity to review the implementation system for public-led renewal projects and to clarify the public sector's role in revitalizing urban renewal in the metropolitan area." He added, "Through close cooperation with related organizations, we will establish a stable and sustainable foundation for public urban renewal projects and take the lead in developing policies to address local issues and improve citizens' residential environments."
