A 'shopping district' is one of the densely clustered commercial areas designated to revitalize local business under the Special Act on the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts. Once designated as a shopping district, stores can register to accept Onnuri gift certificates, and the sales threshold for registering as a local currency merchant is relaxed from 1.2 billion won or less to 3 billion won or less.

With this expansion, the city explained that the number of stores eligible to accept Onnuri gift certificates will increase from 240 to 543.

The Gugal Shopping District, designated in the area of 353-7 Gugal-dong within the commercial zone of Guggal 2 District next to Giheung-gu Office, was the first shopping district designated in Yongin in 2017. Giheung-gu Office is located right next to the shopping district, and the Giheung ICT Valley High-Tech Industrial Complex is also nearby.

Currently, under the relevant law, Yongin has two traditional markets, two shopping districts, and 18 alley-type shopping districts designated.

To further revitalize local business, the city plans to launch the 'Yongin Commercial District Revitalization Center' next year, which will implement support programs tailored to the characteristics of each commercial district.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, said, "Expanding the shopping district will encourage citizens to use Onnuri gift certificates and benefit the local economy. Next year, we will launch the Commercial District Revitalization Center to promote revitalization projects in a more professional and systematic manner."
