Yeongyang County is emerging as a new hub for healing tourism in South Korea, having successfully secured the establishment of the National Yeongyang Jajaknuri Healing Forest.
The National Yeongyang Jajaknuri Healing Forest project, a key initiative for Yeongyang County in North Gyeongsang Province, has passed the final budget review in the National Assembly and will be fully launched starting in 2026.
Yeongyang County's persistent efforts to attract the project have finally paid off, with the National Yeongyang Jajaknuri Healing Forest project being officially included in the 2026 government budget.
This achievement is the result of Yeongyang County continuously communicating the necessity of the project to central government agencies and the National Assembly and successfully building consensus.
The project aims to meet the growing demand for forest recreation and wellness by providing nationwide forest healing services utilizing the region's unique forest resources. It is expected to serve as a key strategic initiative to overcome the issue of local depopulation by stimulating the local economy through increased visitor numbers.
Led by the Korea Forest Service, the project will be implemented entirely with national funding from 2026 to 2029, covering 54 hectares in Jukpa-ri, Subi-myeon, Yeongyang County. In 2026, 200 million won in government funds will be allocated for the basic planning and design phase.
Planned facilities include the World Birch Garden, Jajak Square, Healing Center, Sky Observatory, and Forest Experience Center. Each space is designed with accessibility and healing effects in mind, aiming to create a comprehensive healing complex where visitors can fully relax in nature.
Through this project, Yeongyang County is expected to become a nationally recognized destination for forest healing and tourism. In particular, the project is anticipated to generate synergistic tourism effects in connection with the Yeongyang birch forest, contribute to a steady increase in visitors, and play a significant role in revitalizing the local community.
County Governor Oh Dochang stated, "This project is the result of Yeongyang County's years of persistent efforts to communicate the region's needs and potential to the central government and the National Assembly. It is a valuable achievement accomplished together with our residents," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the National Yeongyang Jajaknuri Healing Forest becomes a leading healing destination representing South Korea."
