Gyeonggi Province Holds Emergency Preparedness Inspection with 31 Cities and Counties Ahead of First Snowfall Forecast on the 4th

With the first snowfall of this winter forecast across the entire province on the evening and night of December 4, Gyeonggi Province held an emergency inspection meeting for deputy heads of the province and city/counties on December 1. Last year, Gyeonggi Province experienced record-breaking heavy snowfall, resulting in the largest-ever damage to both human life (five casualties) and facilities (391.9 billion won). In response, the province has announced a policy to thoroughly prepare in advance for effective snow response.

Kim Sungjoong emphasized, "Although the expected snowfall on the 4th is not significant at 1 to 3 centimeters, due to abnormal weather patterns, we cannot rule out the possibility of snowfall exceeding last year's levels." He added, "Under the principle of 'over-response to disasters,' we must establish a proactive and sincere response system through preemptive preparation."

Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province, in cooperation with city and county governments, plans to thoroughly clear roads to prevent traffic congestion caused by heavy snow. In addition, pedestrian-focused snow removal will be carried out around bus stops, subway station entrances, daycare centers, and senior centers to prevent slip-and-fall accidents.

The province has also requested that city and county governments continue to stockpile and manage de-icing agents to avoid shortages. For those municipalities experiencing shortages, Gyeonggi Province has established a system to directly supply up to 10,000 tons of de-icing agents from its own reserves.

On November 25, Kim Sungjoong visited the snow removal forward base in Gapyeong County to inspect the stockpiling of de-icing agents and the deployment of snow removal equipment.

Furthermore, the province plans to form a joint public-private "emergency inspection team" to inspect vulnerable facilities and prevent casualties resulting from the collapse or toppling of structures due to heavy snowfall.

Gyeonggi Province will also continue to promote safety guidelines to help residents take voluntary actions to avoid risks and prevent damage from heavy snowfall.

Since October, the province has been inspecting vulnerable facilities to prevent human and property damage from heavy snow. Emergency contact systems have been established for 2,410 residential greenhouses, and emergency contact networks have been organized for 4,673 lodging businesses. Additionally, 22 temporary structures have been demolished, and 66 have been repaired or reinforced.
