Geochang County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on December 2 that the "Open Cultural Festival" held at the Winter Jongtaek was successfully concluded.
This event was organized for both Geochang residents and foreigners, offering participants the opportunity to directly experience the life and philosophy of Jeong On, the master of Winter Jongtaek, as well as to enjoy Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Heritage Il Sori and Pansori performances.
Hosted by the Korea Cultural Heritage Utilization Agency, the festival featured programs that shed new light on the historical value of Winter Jongtaek and allowed attendees to experience a variety of traditional rituals and cultural activities.
Upon arrival at the Jongtaek, participants began by greeting the head family and his wife, watched performances of Geochang Il Sori and Pansori-both recognized as Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Heritage-and took part in activities such as shrine greetings, traditional entrance ceremonies, and textbook binding using the five-needle stabilization method.
In particular, the "Il Sori Performance," a traditional cultural event representing Geochang and recognized as Gyeongnam Intangible Cultural Heritage, received an enthusiastic response.
The powerful work songs and performances that resonated at the site vividly conveyed the unique communal culture and spirit of life in the region, greatly enhancing the atmosphere of the event.
Additionally, the newly introduced "Creative Pansori for the Commemoration of Jeong On of Winter Jongtaek" drew significant attention. This creative Pansori, which reinterpreted Jeong On's spirit of loyalty and life from a modern perspective within the traditional Pansori format, deeply moved the audience with its dramatic composition.
Participants praised the event, saying, "It was a special opportunity to experience the spirit of Jeong On through art."
Kim Sookhee, the representative, stated, "I am delighted to be able to share the spirit of Jeong On and the cultural heritage of Winter Jongtaek in various ways," adding, "We will continue to develop cultural heritage programs that engage the local community."
An official from the county said, "We are consistently organizing various experiential events based on our valuable local cultural heritage. Through these activities, we aim to provide more cultural enjoyment opportunities for residents and to contribute to revitalizing local tourism."
