Kumho Construction announced on December 1 that it has been awarded the contract for the "Power Duct Construction Section 2 for Electrical Supply Facilities in Pyeongtaek Area," commissioned by Korea Electric Power Corporation.
This project involves constructing an underground power tunnel along a total length of approximately 5.4 kilometers, connecting Suksung-ri in Oseong-myeon to Godeok-dong in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The total project cost is 218 billion won, with Kumho Construction participating as the lead company in the consortium, holding an 80% stake (174.4 billion won). The construction period is set for 49 months from the start date.

Of this, approximately 5,310 meters will be constructed using the shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) method, a deep excavation technique that requires precise control of ground pressure and the excavation face. This advanced method enables accurate tunneling at great depths, making it effective for building large-scale power ducts, while minimizing noise, vibration, and ground disturbance for enhanced safety. The remaining 113 meters will be constructed using the open-cut method, which involves excavating from the surface downward. Additionally, four vertical shafts-essential structures connecting the underground power duct to above-ground facilities-will be installed.
Upon completion, the project is expected to enable stable power supply to industrial complexes and local communities throughout the Pyeongtaek area.
Kumho Construction continues to strengthen its capabilities in energy infrastructure projects, including power ducts and transmission networks. This year, the company has consecutively secured two power duct projects, including the Pyeongtaek power duct construction and the "Power Duct Construction for Electrical Supply Facilities in the Chungnam Area." Kumho Construction also plans to actively participate in the government’s upcoming "Power Grid and Energy Highway Project."
A Kumho Construction representative stated, "Leveraging our experience with advanced shield TBM techniques and large-scale power duct construction, we will execute this project successfully," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure a stable power supply to the region and industrial complexes."
