Busan Port, often referred to as the "lifeline of the Korean economy," has been officially recognized as a global top-tier port.
On November 28, Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sanggeun) announced that Busan Port was ranked as the fourth leading port in the world in "The Leading Container Ports of the World 2025," a report jointly published by DNV, the world's largest classification society and global certification body, and Menon Economics, a specialized research institute for competitiveness analysis in the shipping and port industry.
According to the report, Busan Port ranked fourth globally, following Singapore, Shanghai, and Ningbo-Zhoushan, demonstrating outstanding competitiveness in various areas such as productivity, connectivity, and sustainability among 160 container ports worldwide.
The report evaluated the current performance and future responsiveness of major global ports based on 23 quantitative indicators in the first stage and 35 quantitative and qualitative indicators in the second stage. The evaluation covered five categories: foundational capabilities, connectivity and customer value, productivity, sustainability, and overall impact, with each category weighted equally.
The evaluation defined Busan Port as "the key connecting hub of Northeast Asia linking China, Japan, and the Pacific, and the primary transshipment hub." The report highlighted the port's infrastructure for accommodating ultra-large vessels and its digital-based smart operation systems as major strengths, and analyzed that smart port technologies such as automation systems and chain portals serve as structural competitive advantages supporting port productivity and efficiency.
Additionally, the Jinhae New Port project, which is being promoted as a mid- to long-term initiative, was cited as a strategic asset that will further elevate Busan Port's global status. The report emphasized that the timely development and integrated operation strategy of Jinhae New Port will be crucial variables determining Busan Port's future ranking and influence.
Song Sanggeun, President of BPA, stated, "It is highly significant that Busan Port's global competitiveness has been recognized by the two most authoritative international organizations," adding, "We will continue to rapidly implement mid- to long-term strategies such as the development of Jinhae New Port and the establishment of eco-friendly infrastructure to further enhance Busan Port's international standing."
