Gimpo-Style Childcare Expands Beyond Protection to Comprehensive Support for Children's Development

The specialized care centers operated by Gimpo City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Byungsoo) are gaining significant popularity among both students and parents through their field-oriented experiential learning programs. As part of the Educational Development Special Zone initiative, there are a total of three specialized care centers, each focusing on distinct areas such as science, a second foreign language, and sports. The high level of satisfaction is attributed to the fact that these specialized elements are designed to be naturally acquired through hands-on experiences, and the programs are structured to encourage children to explore and participate on their own initiative.

Children participating in the science-focused program visited the Oktokki Space Center, where they enhanced their curiosity by directly observing a variety of space-related exhibits and engaged in experiential activities that helped them naturally understand scientific concepts.

Children involved in the second foreign language program visited Chinatown, where they had the opportunity to use Chinese in real-life situations, allowing them to learn the practical application of the language and encounter cultural differences firsthand. This experience broadened their linguistic and cultural sensitivity. Those participating in the sports-focused program took part in horseback riding, where they fed the horses, engaged in bonding activities, and learned basic riding skills, experiencing not only physical activity but also emotional stability and a sense of accomplishment.

This initiative by Gimpo City demonstrates that the role of specialized care centers is expanding beyond simple protection to comprehensively support children's learning, experiences, and growth. By linking indoor education with real-world field experiences, the program has contributed to providing balanced support for holistic development.

Kim Byungsoo, Mayor of Gimpo City, stated, "The specialized care centers in Gimpo's Educational Development Special Zone are practicing experience-based care that allows children to learn and grow from their own perspective. We will continue to expand these specialized programs to create an environment where children can experience a broader world and grow independently, thereby fostering holistic talent development."
