Busan Office of Education Unveils AI-Based Self-Directed English Learning Program 'Penteracy'

Students Expand Literacy and Vocabulary on Their Own
AI-Powered Personalized Learning Support

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seokjun) announced that it has independently developed the AI-based self-directed English literacy learning program 'Penteracy' and will officially release it on November 26. The program is attracting significant attention from students and parents.

'Penteracy' is a name that combines 'Pen' and 'Literacy.' It is designed to allow students to expand their learning by entering words and sentences themselves. Targeting mainly middle and high school students, the program features a text-based AI learning structure in which the AI automatically generates word meanings, example sentences, reading passages, and literacy questions based on the words entered by the student.

A key feature of this program is that learners can expand their learning path using words they have personally selected. In addition, learned words are categorized into 'Unfamiliar-Confusing-Familiar' stages to support repeated learning. The program also effectively supports listening and pronunciation practice at different levels by providing phonetic symbols, repeated listening, and adjustable pronunciation speed.

Prior to the official release, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education conducted a field trial in September with about 20 teachers. Participating teachers evaluated that the program is highly beneficial for broadening vocabulary understanding in various contexts. The features for generating customized passages and sentences according to grade, proficiency, and learning objectives in conjunction with AI, as well as the automatic instruction generation method, were also positively reviewed.

With the release of this program, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education plans to support students in naturally improving their literacy and vocabulary at their own pace and according to their interests. After its release, the program will be available for anyone to download and use free of charge from the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education website.

Superintendent Kim Seokjun stated, "Self-directed learning using AI will provide practical help in improving each student's literacy and thinking skills," adding, "In the future, we will expand the AI-based personalized learning platform not only for English but also for Korean, mathematical literacy, and various other learning areas."
