An exhibition offering a glimpse into the Paleolithic culture of 100,000 years ago, as seen through the oldest archaeological site in Yonghodong, Daejeon, is being held.
The Daejeon Prehistory Museum opened the special exhibition "Chipped Stone Tools in Yonghodong" on November 11 in the museum's second-floor special exhibition hall, and it will run until May 31 next year.
This special exhibition introduces the Paleolithic culture that existed in the region 100,000 years ago, through stone tools excavated from the Yonghodong site located in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon.
The Yonghodong site is the oldest Paleolithic site in Daejeon and marks the beginning of the city's history. It was discovered during the construction of the Seokbong Water Purification Plant in Daejeon. Archaeologists identified 4,235 chipped stone tools, hearths, and stone tool production sites in four cultural layers dating to the Middle and Late Paleolithic periods. Key artifacts on display include stemmed points, hand axes, and ground stone tools.
The artifacts excavated from the Yonghodong site were recognized for their academic value and were designated as a Daejeon Metropolitan City Monument in 2006.
Kim Sunja, Director of the Daejeon Prehistory Museum, stated, "The Yonghodong site is a place where we can explore 100,000 years of history in our region, Daejeon. Through this special exhibition, we hope visitors will gain a deeper understanding of our local Paleolithic culture and develop greater interest and curiosity about prehistoric culture."
In conjunction with the special exhibition, the museum is also offering the academy program "Paleolithic Sites of Korea" and the museum exploration program "Tools of the Paleolithic People: Chipped Stone Tools." These educational programs include humanities lectures for adults on the Paleolithic era and hands-on chipped stone tool-making experiences for children and families. Detailed schedules and information can be found on the Daejeon Prehistory Museum website.
The exhibition is open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Mondays when the museum is closed. No advance reservation or admission fee is required.
