Pyeongchang County in Gangwon Province has completed the establishment of a systematic and efficient road snow removal system for 113 county and rural road routes, totaling 284.4 kilometers, to ensure effective snow removal operations during the winter snowfall season.
The county has designated the period from November 15 of this year to March 15 of next year as the 121-day snow removal response period. During this time, 36 vehicles-including both county-owned and leased equipment-as well as 5,552 tons of de-icing agents (salt and calcium chloride) and 3,186 cubic meters of sand will be pre-positioned at township offices and snow removal standby stations.
Additionally, the county will reinforce its workforce by securing 15 additional snow removal workers, in addition to the existing 12 road maintenance workers. Regular patrols will be conducted in areas prone to frequent icing, such as mountain passes, to create a safe road environment and prevent traffic accidents. In particular, automatic brine spraying devices have been installed and are ready to operate in the Anbandaegi and Moritjae sections, which experience heavy snowfall every year, enabling rapid and efficient snow removal responses.
Furthermore, Pyeongchang County has established a rapid mobilization system for equipment and personnel through cooperation with relevant local agencies and private companies. During the snow removal response period, a 24-hour work system linked to the disaster situation room will be operated.
A three-tiered response system, categorized according to snowfall levels, will be implemented. For village roads where equipment access is difficult, 3,186 cubic meters of sand will be provided so that residents can carry out snow removal themselves.
The county began full-scale winter preparedness on November 12 with safety training and preliminary inspections for snow removal workers. Moving forward, Pyeongchang County plans to prioritize thorough snow removal operations to ensure the safety of residents and maintain smooth traffic conditions.
Oh Hyunwoong, head of the county's Construction Division, stated, "Recent climate trends show that cold waves are occurring alongside localized snowfall, so we will do our utmost to prevent any damage to residents from snow by implementing thorough snow removal measures."
