Gwangju City Holds "Patriotic Veterans Culture Event" to Mark the Month of Patriotic Martyrs

This event was organized to honor the noble sacrifice and contributions of the patriotic martyrs and to remind all citizens of the significance of loving and serving the nation.

More than 300 people attended the event, including Mayor Bang Sehwan, National Assembly members Soh Byunghoon and An Taejun, City Council Chairperson Heo Kyunghaeng, provincial and city council members, heads of nine veterans’ organizations and their families, heads of institutions and social organizations, soldiers, public officials, citizens, and youth, all paying tribute to the spirit of the patriotic martyrs and fallen heroes.

Before the commemorative ceremony, a dedication ceremony for the M48 Patton tank, which was provided on long-term free lease by the 5708th unit, was held at the Memorial Tower. The unveiling of the tank carried a symbolic meaning, reminding attendees that "our peace is built upon the sacrifice of others."

The commemorative ceremony began with a national tribute and a moment of silence for the patriotic martyrs and fallen heroes, followed by a commemorative address by Mayor Bang Sehwan, congratulatory remarks from National Assembly members and the City Council Chairperson, the President of the Gwangju Veterans Organizations Council, and the Commander of the 55th Division, as well as a commemorative performance.

In addition, many students participated in an art contest themed "Patriotic Veterans Culture," further enhancing the significance of the event. On-site, a variety of programs were held, including a patriotic exhibition (featuring the history of national defense and independence activists, and a military equipment display), as well as promotional and experiential booths, all of which received an enthusiastic response from citizens.

Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, "Today's Republic of Korea is the result of the noble sacrifices made by our patriotic martyrs," and added, "Gwangju City will continue to work with its citizens to carry on the spirit of love for the nation demonstrated by our forebears, and will strive to ensure that the culture of honoring veterans is naturally embedded in everyday life."
