A man in his 40s was arrested by police for secretly adding cleaning agent to food eaten by his family. On November 4, the Bundang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that they had apprehended Mr. A as a flagrant offender on suspicion of attempted aggravated assault and were currently investigating the case.
According to police, at 11:35 p.m. the previous day, they responded to a report from Mrs. B, Mr. A's wife, at a residence in Jeongja-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam. Mrs. B reported that "it seemed her husband had put something in the food at home." She discovered footage on the home security camera showing Mr. A adding something to the stew and contacted the police before eating the food.
Mrs. B stated that she had previously noticed a strange taste in food prepared at home several times and had even vomited, which led her to install the home camera. She also claimed that Mr. A may have committed similar acts in the past.
Mr. A admitted to police that he had secretly added tile-cleaning agent to the stew, but insisted, "I have never done anything like this before." Regarding his motive, Mr. A stated, "I did it to prevent Mrs. B from drinking alcohol in front of our child, as she often drinks in their presence."
The cleaning agent Mr. A added to the stew on the day of the report was a product used for cleaning bathroom tiles and was contained in a spray bottle. The bottle was labeled with ingredients such as glycolic acid, purified water, and surfactants, which are commonly found in household cleaning agents, and also carried a warning not to inhale or ingest the product.
It has been reported that Mrs. B is currently in stable health with no major issues. Mr. A and Mrs. B live with one child under the age of ten, and there has been no statement indicating that the child was harmed.
The police plan to request an arrest warrant for Mr. A soon. A police official stated, "We intend to analyze the specific ingredients of the cleaning agent added to the stew on the day of the report and will thoroughly investigate whether there are any additional offenses."
