Samsung Electronics lost an OLED patent infringement lawsuit in the United States and was ordered to pay $191.4 million (approximately 270 billion KRW) in damages.
According to foreign media outlets including Reuters on November 3 (local time), a jury at the U.S. District Court in Texas ruled that Samsung Electronics had infringed two OLED patents held by Pictiva Display and ordered the company to pay damages.
The technologies found to be infringed relate to improving the resolution, brightness, and power efficiency of OLED displays. Pictiva filed the lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in 2023, claiming that its OLED technology had been used without authorization in Samsung products such as Galaxy smartphones, TVs, PCs, and wearable devices. Samsung countered that the patents in question were invalid, but this argument was not accepted by the court.
Pictiva is a subsidiary of Key Patent Innovations, a company specializing in patents, and holds hundreds of patents, including OLED technology developed by Osram in the early 2000s.
Angela Quinlan, CEO of Pictiva, stated that the verdict "demonstrates the strength of Pictiva's intellectual property rights."
Samsung Electronics announced, "We will initiate an appeal process regarding the verdict that concluded we infringed two patents," adding, "We are already proceeding with a separate lawsuit at the U.S. Patent Office to invalidate the patents and expect a favorable outcome."
