WeGO, established in 2010, is the world's first and largest international organization for smart cities, with over 200 cities and institutions from more than 60 countries participating as members.

It leads global innovation networks by spearheading smart city policy, digital transformation, and intercity cooperation.

Since joining as an associate member earlier this year, Pohang City has been actively engaged in smart city policy and technology exchange. For this Executive Committee meeting, a delegation led by Heo Jungwook, Director of Urban Safety and Housing, attended on behalf of the city.

The delegation shared strategies on smart cities, AI services, and data innovation with mayors and senior representatives from various countries, exploring the future direction of global smart cities together.

Director Heo Jungwook stated, "This approval as a full member is the result of international recognition for Pohang City's smart city policies and technological capabilities. Moving forward, we will actively participate in WeGO's international joint research, technology exchanges, and global public projects to develop Pohang into a leading smart city in Northeast Asia."

With this official approval, Pohang City will pursue hosting the WeGO General Assembly in 2029. The WeGO General Assembly is an international event where leading smart cities from around the world gather, and the host city benefits from enhanced city branding, prestige, and expanded opportunities for industrial cooperation.

Through this, the city plans to spread its AI and data-driven smart city model worldwide and strengthen urban diplomacy and industrial collaboration.

In September, Pohang City was the only domestic city to receive a main award at the 'Smart Life Week 2025 Smart City Awards' held at COEX in Seoul, competing among hundreds of cities worldwide.

This achievement was attributed to Pohang City's AI-based, citizen-oriented smart services, which received high praise both domestically and internationally. The recent approval as a full WeGO member is seen as an extension of these accomplishments.

Pohang City has presented a vision to emerge as a sustainable global smart city by accelerating international cooperation activities, including joint research and technology exchange with global cities, attracting international forums, and promoting R&D projects.
