The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), led by President Cho Jeonghee, has announced the results of the 2025 National Survey on Public Perception of Marine and Fisheries.
This survey was conducted from April 1 to April 13, targeting 3,000 adults aged 19 and older nationwide, with the aim of identifying changes in public perception of marine and fisheries and policy demands amid rapidly changing domestic and international environments.
According to the results, the core keywords for this year's perception of marine and fisheries are "everyday life" and "real experience." When asked about the images most associated with marine and fisheries, respondents cited ▲food (seafood and marine products), ▲sightseeing (the sea and marine environments), and ▲leisure activities (such as recreation and boats). This indicates that marine and fisheries have become industries closely connected to the daily lives of the public.
Regarding changes in the external environment, a majority of respondents reported a strong awareness of the risk of population extinction in fishing and coastal communities (87.3%) and the impact of changes in the international situation (84.4%). In particular, many respondents indicated that the climate crisis and geopolitical risks are having a serious impact across the marine and fisheries sector.
The perceived effectiveness of policies increased from 50.5 points in 2021 to 54.0 points in 2025, suggesting that the public is gradually evaluating the outcomes of marine and fisheries policies more positively. In addition, more than 80% of respondents assigned high value to the public functions of the marine, fisheries, and fishing village sectors, and most also expressed support for the expansion of related policies.
In the general perception survey on marine and fisheries, more than eight out of ten respondents stated that "marine and fisheries are important to the Earth's ecosystem and human civilization," and over 70% showed at least a moderate level of interest. The most frequently associated images included the sea and marine environments (13.1%) and ports (5.7%), which are elements closely related to everyday life.
As for the main areas of interest in the marine and fisheries sector, the top responses were ▲seafood prices (46.9%), ▲seafood cuisine and restaurants (46.8%), and ▲seafood food safety (38.1%), indicating that marine and fisheries are deeply embedded in the nation's food culture and consumption patterns.
