Gochon-ri in Gijang, Busan Transformed into Dementia-Friendly Community... Designated as "Dementia Safety Village"

Gijang County in Busan (Governor: Jung Jongbok) has newly designated Gochon-ri in Cheolma-myeon as a "Dementia Safety Village" and is taking steps to create a dementia-friendly community.

Cheolma-myeon is one of four towns in the region and has relatively limited infrastructure for dementia care. Local residents have consistently called for expanded dementia management services in the area.

In response, the Dementia Safety Center at the Gijang County Public Health Center conducted a local status survey, awareness survey, and review by the operations committee starting in July, and officially designated Gochon-ri as a Dementia Safety Village.

Following this designation, the Dementia Safety Center will implement customized support programs centered on Gochon-ri, including dementia prevention education, early screening, environmental improvements, and awareness campaigns.

Previously, the center held a one-day dementia prevention class for Gochon-ri residents and operated a campaign booth for "Dementia Overcoming Day" to foster community participation in advance.

An official from the Gijang County Public Health Center stated, "The designation of a Dementia Safety Village is meaningful as it lays the foundation for residents to understand and prevent dementia themselves," adding, "We will continue to expand environments where dementia patients and their families can live with peace of mind."

The Dementia Safety Village initiative aims to create an environment where community members have the right understanding of dementia and can embrace patients and their families.

Currently, Gijang County operates outstanding Dementia Safety Villages in Icheon-ri, Ilgwang-myeon and Ori, Jangan-myeon. With the new designation of Gochon-ri in Cheolma-myeon, the county is expected to accelerate the spread of dementia-friendly communities.
