On the 24th, the council officially launched the 'AI Demonstration City Special Committee (AI Special Committee)' and, at its first meeting, appointed Assemblyman Kang Suhoon as chair and Assemblywoman Hong Giwol as vice chair.
Regarding the recent decision by Samsung SDS to exclude Gwangju from its application for the National AI Computing Center, the AI Special Committee stated, "We find this very unfortunate and disappointing, but Gwangju's 'dream as an AI-centered city' will never be broken and will continue. Through the activities of the special committee, we will foster the AI industry."
The committee announced, "We will review the achievements of Gwangju's AI Phase 1 and 2 projects over the past five years and carry out regulatory innovation and institutional improvement activities to advance as an AI demonstration city."
Chair Kang Suhoon emphasized, "Gwangju is already a city equipped with the infrastructure and professional workforce for the artificial intelligence industry. We will actively listen to the voices of local AI companies, research institutions, and organizations, and provide strong support so that Gwangju can establish itself as an AI demonstration city."
Starting with a work report from the executive branch on the 29th, the committee plans to begin a full-scale review of all AI industry policies and projects currently being promoted by Gwangju. The special committee consists of eight members: Kang Suhoon, Park Sugi, Shim Changuk, Shim Cheolui, An Pyeonghwan, Lee Myeongno, Chae Eunji, and Hong Giwol, and will operate until March 31 of next year.
