Including the results of this meeting, a total of 6,951 cases have been reviewed to date, processing approximately 64% of the total reported cases (10,879 cases).
The 504 cases that passed the review this time consist of 53 cases decided by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, 260 cases with official certificates attached, and 191 cases with guarantor statements and others. Review opinions will be prepared for each case and submitted to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Honor Restoration Committee (chaired by the Prime Minister), requesting decisions on the victims and bereaved families.
The Working Committee recognizes the historical responsibility of uncovering the truth about the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and is committed to making decisions on the victims and their families swiftly and fairly in accordance with laws and procedures.
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, stated, "We will complete 100% of the investigation and review of the 7,465 cases reported in the first and second rounds within this year, and will also promptly process the 3,414 cases reported in the third round." He added, "Since less than half of the cases have been decided by the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Central Committee, I met with the Prime Minister in August to request an increase in review personnel for a more expedited process."
He further emphasized, "Uncovering the truth of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident is not only about overcoming conflict and wounds, but also about upholding the values of peace and human rights. I will continue to do my utmost to fulfill this mission of our time to the very end."
