GC Green Cross Wellbeing announced on October 21 that its "Longvida Turmeric Extract" has been approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as an individually recognized functional ingredient that may help improve cognitive function.
An individually recognized functional ingredient refers to a newly developed raw material whose functionality and safety have been verified through preclinical and human application trials. With this approval, GC Green Cross Wellbeing now possesses four individually recognized functional ingredients for health functional foods, following honeysuckle flower bud extract, Chrysanthemum zawadskii extract, and LB-P9 hair probiotics.
The Longvida Turmeric Extract, which received approval this time, has demonstrated its efficacy through one in vitro test, four animal studies, and three human application trials. Brain cells begin to decline after the age of 30, and ongoing stress, alcohol, drugs, lack of sleep, and depression can accelerate brain cell fatigue, leading to reduced memory and cognitive function. Longvida Turmeric Extract is a health functional food ingredient that may help protect brain cells from various damaging agents such as oxidative stress and Tau protein hyperphosphorylation, and support the activation of brain function.
In particular, a human application trial involving 80 individuals aged 50 to 85 who were diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment observed that the extract helped significantly improve memory, concentration, and language function.
Park Donghwan, Head of Production at GC Green Cross Wellbeing, explained, "Traditional turmeric or curcuma longa extracts have had some issues with absorption, but 'Longvida Turmeric Extract' is an innovative ingredient that mimics a liposomal structure, greatly improving absorption and increasing bioavailability by 200 times."
Kim Jaewon, Head of Research and Development at GC Green Cross Wellbeing, stated, "Longvida Turmeric Extract has been classified as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and its safety and efficacy have also been confirmed in human trials. We plan to launch a new product emphasizing its cognitive function improvement benefits to consumers early next year."
