The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on October 19 that it will host the Seoul International Architecture Forum to promote the excellence of Korean architecture and strengthen the global capabilities of architects by sharing a vision for the future of urban architecture.
The Seoul International Architecture Forum will take place on October 22 at the main building of Seoul City Hall. The event will feature congratulatory remarks and keynote speeches from key figures such as Regina Gonthier, President of the International Union of Architects (UIA), and Han Younggeun, President of the Korean Institute of Architects, as well as thematic presentations and panel discussions.
This year's forum particularly emphasizes intergenerational exchange. Promising young architects from Seoul will have the opportunity to meet directly with world-renowned architecture scholars and distinguished architects, enabling them to build meaningful networks.
The forum will focus on three main themes: sustainable architecture, innovation in future-oriented architecture based on smart technology, and the spread of architectural culture that citizens can experience firsthand. Discussions will explore ways to expand green architecture and zero-energy buildings in response to the climate crisis and environmental challenges. In addition, participants will share efficient and intelligent urban management strategies utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, and smart architectural technologies. Public architecture innovation strategies aimed at transforming architecture from mere buildings into spaces that enrich citizens' lives will also be discussed.
Experts from Korea and abroad will present innovative case studies and policy experiences from various countries, and in-depth panel discussions will address practical urban issues facing Seoul and explore avenues for global cooperation.
Based on the ideas and policy proposals generated at the forum, the city plans to collaborate with the international community to develop new architectural and urban models to address future urban challenges, and to establish a comprehensive development strategy that integrates policy, technology, and culture. Even after the forum, Seoul will continue to promote the excellence of K-Architecture through the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, which will run until November 18.
Choi Jinseok, Director of Housing Policy at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "Seoul has developed a distinctive architectural culture by harmoniously blending modern architecture and advanced infrastructure with traditional buildings such as the Han River, mountains, palaces, and hanok. Now, we aim to take a further step forward by leading sustainable, future-oriented urban architectural innovation centered on three pillars: advanced technology, eco-friendliness, and quality of life for citizens."
