Ulsan Institute of Health and Environment Research Finds No Radioactivity in Marketed Foods

644 Food Products, Including Seafood, Tested from January to September
No Radioactive Substances Detected in Any Sample

The Ulsan Institute of Health and Environment Research announced that, after conducting radiological safety tests on 644 food products produced and distributed in the Ulsan region from January to September this year, no radioactive substances were detected in any of the samples.

The tests covered 532 samples of seafood, 64 samples of agricultural products, and 48 samples of processed foods. A thorough analysis was conducted for radioactive iodine (131I) and cesium (134Cs, 137Cs), and all items were found to be 'non-detectable.'

The institute concentrated 83% of the total tests on seafood to alleviate public concerns amid the ongoing discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

In particular, priority was given to items such as flatfish, seaweed, and abalone, which are widely produced in Ulsan and frequently consumed by residents, focusing on ensuring the safety of foods closely related to daily life.

The results of the food radiation tests can be found on the website of the Ulsan Institute of Health and Environment Research.

An official from the institute stated, "As Tokyo Electric Power Company has announced plans to discharge contaminated water in three phases from October this year to March next year, we will continue to conduct radiation tests focused on seafood and promptly release the results to maintain a food safety management system that reassures citizens."

In June, the institute received a 'Satisfactory' rating for the cesium (137Cs) category in the '2025 Food Radiation Proficiency Assessment' organized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, thereby proving the accuracy and reliability of its analytical results.
