On October 14, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Jin Youngseung stated that there is a strong possibility that the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which North Korea unveiled at the military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party on October 10, may have received technological support from Russia.
Chairman Jin made these remarks in response to a related question from Assemblyman Yoo Yongwon of the People Power Party during a National Defense Committee audit held at the Joint Chiefs of Staff headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, that morning.
When asked whether the South Korean military is capable of intercepting the Hwasong-11ma hypersonic missile, which was also unveiled that day, Chairman Jin responded, "Even if the interception rate is somewhat lower, it is still possible to intercept it," adding, "The military is taking these concerns very seriously, but there is still room to verify North Korea's actual technological capabilities regarding this missile."
Chairman Jin also commented on the North Korean military parade, saying, "It was impressive that they proceeded with the event despite the rain," and added, "I also felt that by mobilizing a large number of personnel and equipment, North Korea is attempting to actualize its operational plans."
