A man in his 40s has been arrested by the police after hiding his girlfriend's body in a kimchi refrigerator for about a year following her murder.
The Gunsan Police Station in North Jeolla Province announced on September 30 that they had urgently arrested and are investigating Mr. A (in his 40s) on charges of murder and abandoning a body.
Mr. A is suspected of killing his girlfriend, Ms. B (also in her 40s), on October 20 last year at an apartment in Jochon-dong, Gunsan, and then concealing her body in a kimchi refrigerator.
The police began their investigation after receiving a report the previous day from the family of a woman who lives with Mr. A, stating, "Mr. A said he killed someone." The police later discovered Ms. B's body at the apartment where she had lived. The body was found frozen and had not decomposed.
Ms. B's family had recently filed a missing person report with the police after being unable to reach her by phone and only receiving messages online.
The police believe that Mr. A instructed the woman he lived with to send messages pretending to be Ms. B, and during this process, he confessed his crime to her.
According to the police, Mr. A had been contacting Ms. B's family and paying her rent while in possession of her mobile phone, pretending to be her in order to cover up the crime. It was also found that Mr. A had no particular occupation and had been living by day trading stocks.
During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly stated that the crime occurred after an argument over stock trading issues.
A police official said, "Mr. A has admitted to most of the crime, and we have applied for an arrest warrant. We plan to conduct an autopsy on Ms. B's body to investigate the circumstances of the incident."
