The Seoul Metropolitan Government will provide newlywed couples with up to 1 million won to help cover marriage and household setup expenses.
On September 30, the city announced a pilot program that will offer cash support of up to 1 million won for household goods and setup costs to 1,000 newlywed households with incomes at or below 120% of the median income. Applications can be submitted from October 13 to 24 through the Mongttang Information Key website.
Eligible applicants are couples who registered their marriage after July 14 of this year. At least one spouse must be a registered resident of Seoul (for at least 180 days prior to the application date and until the payment decision date), the couple's combined income must not exceed 120% of the median income (4,719,190 won for a two-person household), and at least one spouse must be a South Korean citizen.
This support is available only once in a lifetime. Couples who have already received this benefit or have received funding for household goods through the Seoul Public Wedding Hall Support Program are not eligible.
If the number of applicants exceeds the available budget, recipients will be selected in order of lower income, earlier application date, and earlier marriage registration date.
Applicants must submit receipts or other proof of expenses for marriage preparations and household setup costs. Those selected as final recipients will undergo a verification process, and the funds are expected to be distributed in December. Receipts for expenses incurred within one year prior to the application date up to the application date will be accepted.
The support funds can be used for marriage-related expenses such as household goods, wedding venues, and honeymoons, as well as for purchasing kitchen appliances and furniture. However, costs for studio photography, dresses, and makeup are excluded from eligible expenses.
Choi Hyunjung, Director of Low Birthrate Policy at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "Seoul aims to create a child- and parenting-friendly environment not only by supporting newlyweds, but also by providing comprehensive, lifecycle-based policies that cover everything from meeting and marriage to childrearing and care."
