On September 28, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that, in order to minimize public inconvenience caused by the fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS), all local tax filing and payment deadlines will be extended until the 15th of next month.
With this measure, all local taxes-including property tax due on September 30 and acquisition tax and others with deadlines between September 29 and October 15-can be filed and paid by October 15. The Ministry explained that this action was taken to prevent any disadvantages to the public, considering the unexpected service disruption and the Chuseok holiday period.
Acquisition tax filings must be done in person. Although the current local tax system is operating normally, the use of Smart Wetax (mobile) is restricted, and it is not possible to look up real estate transaction certificate numbers due to a failure in the Real Estate Transaction Management System.
Accordingly, for acquisition tax filings, individuals must visit the local government tax office in person with the relevant documents to complete the process.
Additionally, if it is difficult to verify whether local tax reduction requirements are met due to the system failure, the reduction will be applied first, and after the system is restored, if it is confirmed that the taxpayer is not eligible for the reduction, only the reduced amount of the principal tax will need to be paid, without any additional penalty. For inquiries related to tax filing and payment, the Government Civil Service Call Center (110) or the tax office of each local government can provide guidance.
