Kyungsung University Joins Glocal University 30 as Standalone Model... Busan Marks Three Consecutive Years of Selection

Proposing an Ultra-Realistic Convergence Campus,
Securing Up to 100 Billion Won in National Funding
Following the Busan National University-Education University Integration Model
and the Dong-A University-Dongseo University Alliance Model

Kyungsung University has joined the Glocal University 30 initiative as the last addition.

In Busan, following the Busan National University-Busan National University of Education integration model in 2023 and the Dong-A University-Dongseo University alliance model in 2024, the Kyungsung University standalone model has been added this year. As a result, a total of five universities will carry out three Glocal innovation projects.

The Busan Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Hyungjun) announced on the 28th that the Ministry of Education has selected the Kyungsung University standalone model as the final winner in the official designation review for the '2025 Glocal University 30' initiative.

The Glocal University initiative is a project aimed at fostering universities with global competitiveness to drive the joint growth of local communities and universities. Selected universities receive up to 100 billion won in support over five years. This year, 81 universities nationwide submitted 55 proposals, with 25 universities and 18 models passing the preliminary review. Ultimately, seven were selected. With this final round, a total of 27 models have been designated since 2023, marking the conclusion of the Glocal University selection process.

The newly designated universities by region are: three in the Chungcheong region (Soonchunhyang University, Hanseo University, and the Chungnam National University-Gongju National University integration), two in the Jeolla region (Chonnam National University and the Chosun University-Chosun Nursing College integration), one in the Jeju region (Jeju National University), and one in the Gyeongsang region (Kyungsung University).

In Busan, with the selection of the Kyungsung University standalone model this year, following the Busan National University-Busan National University of Education integration model in 2023 and the Dong-A University-Dongseo University alliance model in 2024, a total of three models and five universities will implement innovation strategies through 2029.

Kyungsung University aims to become a 'K-Culture Global Innovation Leading University' by transforming into a MEGA (Media/Movie, Entertainment, Gala/MICE, Arts) specialized convergence campus, operating industry-academia integrated production facilities, and promoting global linkage programs.

The city has established a support system connecting local government, universities, and industry. After this selection, it plans to focus on generating results and spreading sustainable models. From the second half of the year, the city will submit a revised plan to the Ministry of Education and officially launch the project.

Mayor Park Hyungjun stated, "This year marks the first year of the Busan-led RISE project, shifting to a region-driven university innovation model that offers opportunities for local communities and universities to grow together. We will support not only Glocal Universities but also the innovation models of universities that were not selected, linking them with the Busan-style RISE initiative to drive regional innovation."
