Kim Minjae, Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated at an emergency briefing held at the Seoul Government Complex on this day, "Although the battery fire was extinguished around 6:30 a.m. today, 647 work systems at the Daejeon headquarters of the National Information Resources Service remain shut down. We will swiftly restore major government services with significant public impact, such as Post Office Financial Services and postal services, as a priority."

The fire is believed to have started from a battery whose power had been cut off during work to relocate an uninterruptible power supply battery to the basement.

The National Information Resources Service, including the Daejeon headquarters and the Gwangju and Daegu centers (which function as branches), has an information system capable of providing a total of 1,600 government work services. Of these, the 647 systems that are currently down are located at the Daejeon headquarters.

Vice Minister Kim explained, "We are currently prioritizing the restoration of the air conditioning and humidity control units, and after that, we plan to restart the servers and proceed with recovery measures." The ministry classifies national information systems into four levels according to importance, based on factors such as investment or recovery priority in the event of a failure. Restoration will be prioritized according to the number of users and the potential impact.

An official from the ministry stated, "Not only Post Office Financial Services and postal services, but also government sites frequently used by the public, such as Government24, will be prioritized for recovery," adding, "We plan to gradually expand recovery efforts in subsequent stages."

Vice Minister Kim said, "To prevent citizens from suffering disadvantages due to delays in civil service processing, we have instructed and requested cooperation from relevant agencies to extend deadlines for tax payments and document submissions that fall before system normalization." He added, "To ensure that citizens are not caught off guard by the disruption of government services, we sent a disaster alert text message at 8 a.m. today, informing the public that major government services, including the e-People portal, are restricted and advising them to check service availability before visiting government offices."

He continued, "If you need to apply for civil services or other services, we ask that you follow the guidance of the relevant agencies and use alternative websites or offline service counters," adding, "For your reference, detailed information about the government service disruptions and alternative sites is also available via a notice on Naver."

Vice Minister Kim reiterated, "We sincerely apologize for failing to meet the public's expectations and for the significant inconvenience caused by this disruption," promising, "We will do our utmost to restore services quickly and stabilize the situation."
