Son Heungmin scored in his third consecutive Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season match.
On the morning of September 22, at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, Son Heungmin netted a go-ahead goal in the third minute of first-half stoppage time during a home game against Real Salt Lake, with the score tied at 1-1. Receiving a pass from teammate Martinez just outside the penalty arc, Son Heungmin calmly adjusted his aim with a couple of right-foot touches before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that found the back of the net. The ball, struck cleanly with the instep of his left foot, deflected off the lower left post and was sucked into the goal. The opposing goalkeeper dove, but the shot was placed too sharply to be reached and the ball had already crossed the line.
The opening goal came from Salt Lake. Bryan Vera of Salt Lake scored the first goal with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the box in the 14th minute of the first half.
After conceding the opening goal, Son Heungmin led his team's counterattack. In the 24th minute, he combined with Bouanga for a strong left-footed shot inside the penalty area, but the opposing goalkeeper made a crucial save. In the 37th minute, he assisted Martinez's shot with a sharp penetrating pass.
LAFC scored two consecutive goals in first-half stoppage time to turn the game around.
Just one minute into stoppage time, Son Heungmin exchanged a one-two pass with Denis Bouanga inside the penalty area, assisting Bouanga's equalizer.
Two minutes later, he received a pass from Martinez outside the penalty arc and scored a mid-range left-footed goal to give his team the lead. This marked Son Heungmin's sixth goal of the regular season.
With Son Heungmin contributing one goal and one assist, LAFC finished the first half leading 2-1.
