The Jeollanam-do Institute of Oceans and Fisheries Science recently predicted, based on sea temperature analysis, that the optimal period for seaweed seeding in 2026 will be from late September to early October for Pyropia dentata (Gopchang-gim), and from early to mid-October for Pyropia pseudolinearis (Momunui-dol-gim) and general laver (Bangsamunui-gim).

This year, sea temperatures in the Jeonnam coastal waters remained similar to or lower than average and last year’s levels until June. Starting in July, temperatures were somewhat higher, but have recently shown a temporary decline, resulting in irregular fluctuations. This makes it necessary to continue monitoring to determine the optimal seeding period.

Accordingly, the Jeonnam Institute of Oceans and Fisheries Science stated that, taking into account the recent sea temperature changes, the seaweed seeding period this year is expected to be similar to last year.

The optimal seeding period for Pyropia dentata by region is as follows: after September 28 in Haenam, after September 29 in Jindo, after October 1 in Yeonggwang and Hampyeong, after October 2 in Wando, after October 3 in Jangheung, and after October 5 in Mokpo, Shinan, and Muan.

For Pyropia pseudolinearis and general laver, the optimal period is expected to be after October 5 in Goheung and Jindo, after October 7 in Jangheung and Haenam, after October 8 in Wando and Gangjin, and after October 12 in Mokpo, Shinan, and Muan.

The Jeonnam Institute of Oceans and Fisheries Science is closely monitoring the fishing grounds by analyzing sea temperature and nutrients to ensure that fishers can seed at the optimal time. The institute also operates a "Seaweed Seeding Consultation Office" in each region, continuously checking the maturity of conchocelis on shells and conducting field inspections to strengthen technical support. In addition, real-time sea temperature information is provided through the "Jeonnam Bada Allimi" website so that fishers can check the current sea temperature conditions on site.

Kim Chungnam, Director of the Jeonnam Institute of Oceans and Fisheries Science, stated, "Seaweed seeding is a crucial period that determines the success or failure of aquaculture, so accurate confirmation of sea temperature and proper timing are extremely important. We will do our utmost to provide technical support to ensure seeding is done at the optimal time."
