Resorts across Gangwon Province are reaching out to help the citizens of Gangneung, who are suffering from severe water shortages due to an extreme drought. On September 8, a resort in Yangyang announced that it would offer its indoor sauna, usually priced at 44,000 won, for just 8,000 won. Following this, on September 11, a resort in Pyeongchang also stated it would charge only 5,000 won for sauna use.


On September 11, a resort located in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, announced on its website, "As a member of the local community, we have prepared a special sauna benefit for the citizens of Gangneung so that you may have a place to wash and rest, even if only for a short while."

This resort is offering its sauna, normally priced at 20,000 won, for a discounted rate of 5,000 won. The offer is available to Gangneung citizens who present identification, and it can be used from September 11 to September 30, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.


A resort representative said, "We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the citizens of Gangneung, who are experiencing significant inconvenience in their daily lives due to the recent drought and water outages. Although our gesture may be small, we hope that a moment of relaxation in warm water can provide some comfort and strength during these difficult times."

'Much-Needed Rain for Drought-Stricken Gangneung'

As the disaster caused by the prolonged drought continues, there is finally some good news for the citizens of Gangneung. On Friday, September 12, strong and heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder, and lightning is forecast for the Gangwon region starting late in the afternoon. Gangneung is expected to receive up to 60mm of much-needed rain.


According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon could receive 30 to 100mm of rain, the east coast of Gangwon 20 to 60mm, and the northern east coast of Gangwon could see more than 100mm. As of 6 a.m., the water level at Obong Reservoir, which supplies 87% of Gangneung's domestic water, stood at 11.6% (compared to the average of 71.2%), a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from the previous day.


The Korea Meteorological Administration advised, "Due to the very strong and heavy rain, there is a risk of damage. Please be cautious of flooding, isolation, and other safety accidents, and take care in managing crops."
