Notably, the area around Dansem Elementary School is home to several schools, such as Gamail Baekje Middle School, Gamail High School, and Shinwoo Elementary School, resulting in significant traffic congestion and heightened risk of accidents during school commute hours. In response, the heads of each organization actively participated on-site by positioning themselves at major crosswalks and along school routes, controlling vehicle access and guiding compliance with traffic signals to ensure students’ safe passage.
Earlier, on September 4, a "Children First" traffic safety campaign was held at the main gate of Wirye Forest Elementary School, together with the Hanam Police Station, the Hanam Model Drivers Association, and parent safety ambassadors from the Gyeonggi-do School Safety Mutual Aid Association. Participants wore sashes bearing messages such as "Stop at the Crosswalk" and "Protect Children," urging adherence to traffic regulations in school zones and educating students on the importance of safe walking habits.
Mayor Lee expressed his gratitude, saying, "I would like to thank the Gwangju Hanam Office of Education, the Hanam Police Station, and all traffic safety volunteer organizations for their efforts in creating a safe walking environment for children," and added, "We will continue striving to make Hanam a 'city of happiness for children' that prioritizes their safety above all else."
Meanwhile, the city is implementing various child safety protection policies to create an environment where children can walk safely and with peace of mind. These initiatives include operating a walking school bus program to establish safe school routes, developing Hanam-style school zones to achieve zero traffic accidents in child protection zones, and running the Elementary School Security Guard (School Safety Keeper) program to ensure children's safety both inside and outside schools.
